caitiff, agraffe, nordyl

4. caitiff (KAY-tif) (noun): A coward. This medieval word comes from the old French and was regularly hurled by knights at one another as they jousted for their ladies’ honor.

5. agraffe (uh-GRAF) (noun): The wire that holds the cork on a champagne bottle. The word comes from the French “agrafer,” which means to hook or fasten.

6. nordyl (NOR-duhl) (noun): Similar to “idyll,” which refers to poetry about life in the country, “nordyl” refers to poetry about the joys of life in cold climates. Ancient Greek poet Theocritus wrote many idylls in the third century. William Cullen Bryant wrote many nordyls during the nineteenth century.
